Hit-and-run driver struck, killed bicyclist in north Alabama, authorities say
Authorities are searching for a vehicle suspected of striking and killing an Athens man riding a bicycle Wednesday.
Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said the incident happened at about 5:35 p.m. Wednesday on Looney Road near Pine Road, about six miles north of Athens in Limestone County.
Charles S. Olney, 68, was operating a bicycle when he was struck in the roadway by a vehicle. After the initial impact, the bicycle left the roadway and Olney was thrown off. The vehicle left the scene and the exact vehicle type, as well as the driver, is still unknown.
The vehicle is believed to be a Chevrolet Colorado or a GMC Canyon, with damage to the passenger side. Anyone with information is asked to contact ALEA Troopers at (256) 353-0631.
Bailey said Olney was taken to Athens Limestone Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
