Here’s your chance to adopt an Alabama sea turtle nest

Have you ever wanted to adopt a sea turtle nest?

If so, an organization along the Gulf Coast is giving volunteers that option to help protect hatchlings that make their way from the nest to the sea.

The Alabama Coastal Foundation is offering volunteers a 14 tiered option to sponsor a sea turtle nest. The program is dubbed Share the Beach Adopt-a-Nest.

The lowest sponsorship option one can donate to costs $20 for students and then starts at $50 for non-students. The cost for sponsorship donations then increases to $100, $500, $1000, and finally $5,000.

Nesting season for sea turtles has been underway since May and will last until August. The eggs that are laid during the period will begin to hatch in July and continue until October.

According to the Alabama Forestry Commission, there are three species of sea turtles that nest along Alabama’s beaches which are the loggerhead sea turtle, leatherback sea turtle and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle.

Sea turtles are considered endangered species and are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act.
