Fans and media couldn’t believe it Sunday when Iowa’s Caitlin Clark was assessed a technical in the NCAA women’s national championship game Sunday in a loss to LSU.

In a game that seemed to be dominated by questionable calls on both sides, the technical appeared to stand out. The technical, as you know, also counts as a personal foul, which means the Iowa star earned her fourth of the game.

After the game, there was an explanation for the call from referee Lisa Jones, who was asked by a pool reporter about the technical foul, per Nicole Auerbach.

As it turns out, Iowa had already been hit with a delay-of-game warning for a previous incident when a player hit the ball after a made basket. When Clark tossed the ball, the result was a technical. Had there not been a prior incident, she would have received a warning at worst.
