Here’s why Birmingham’s largest hotel has a secret nighttime identity

Birmingham’s largest hotel by day is known as the Sheraton, but by nightfall it transforms into the new ‘Herato’ hotel to thousands of motorists heading west along I-20/59.

It’s not a brand switch or fancy new name change. Rather, a closer look at the sign reveals the new name is the result of the ‘S’ and ‘N’ being unlit at night.

The hotel is owned by the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center. BJCC CEO Tad Snider told AL.com that the Sheraton letters and logo on the south face of the building are being replaced for a new logo that comports with a new national Sheraton brand style.

The project should be completed in a week, Snider said.

So, until then, the ‘Herato’ continues to illuminate over Birmingham’s Uptown entertainment district.
