Here’s why a ‘Stranger Things’ star was in Alabama

“Stranger Things” fans in Alabama may have spotted a familiar face on stage this week, if they visited a certain concert venue in Birmingham.

Finn Wolfhard, one of the stars of the Netflix series, has been performing some shows with his friends in the Sharp Pins, testing out material for a forthcoming solo album. Wolfhard, 21, is a musician as well as an actor, playing in rock bands such as Calpurnia and the Aubreys.

The actor’s concert schedule for May included a Tuesday show at Saturn in Birmingham, where he was billed as a special guest.

“Hello everyone,” Wolfhard said in a May 14 Instagram post. “I’m playing a show at 529 in Atlanta. I’ll be testing out songs from my first upcoming solo album with the amazing @hallogalloinc and SHRUG. Incredibly excited for it. Also playing a show on May 28th at the Saturn in Birmingham Alabama along @hallogalloinc.”

Two more Instagram posts from the actor hyped tickets for the Saturn show on May 28 and invited fans to “come hear new music from all of us!” Wolfhard has 22.6 million followers on Instagram, along with 223,000 followers for the Aubreys.

Saturn also mentioned that Wolfhard would be on stage Tuesday night, but kept the info under wraps until a few days before the show.

Videos of Wolfhard’s performance at Saturn surfaced Wednesday on the YouTube channel Panickelodeon! at the Disco, showing the “Stranger Things” actor in low-key rock mode.

“I’m going to play a bunch of songs from the record that won’t come out for another few months,” Wolfhard says in the video below. “But I had a great time making it.” He adds that Kai Slater of the Sharp Pins was his producer, and says “all my friends are here backing me up.”

In another video filmed at Saturn, Wolfhard joins the Sharp Pins on bass guitar and backing vocals. His Monday performance at 529, a concert venue in Atlanta, can be found on YouTube, as well. Although the Sharp Pins played on May 24 at Gold Sprint, a coffeeshop in Huntsville, Wolfhard evidently didn’t appear at that show.

During a March interview for the 2024 movie “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” Wolfhard told The Hollywood Reporter his new album was due in 2025, and confirmed that he hasn’t left the Aubreys.

“The Aubreys will always be around,” Wolfhard said. “It will always be a project with me and Malcolm [Craig]. But I’m in the midst of finding a label and putting out a solo album under my name. So that’ll come out next year, and I’m really excited about it. It’s a little noisier with more rock and lo-fi stuff that I recorded all on tape.”

Wolfhard plays Trevor Spengler in “Frozen Empire,” reprising a character from 2021′s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” He’s best known for his work in “Stranger Things,” however, and has been an important character on the series for four seasons.

A release date hasn’t been set for the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things,” but a Netflix announced earlier this month that production for the new season was underway.

Wolfhard is the latest in a fairly long list of actors who’ve showcased their music skills in Birmingham, following in the footsteps of movie and TV stars such as Jeff Goldblum, Jared Leto, Steve Martin, Kevin Bacon and more.

Wolfhard isn’t the only “Stranger Things” cast member who pursues music as a sideline, by the way. As many as 10 actors from the series have released singles, play in bands or write original material, according to Billboard. The list includes Gaten Matarazzo, who also appeared on Broadway in 2023 in a revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

And here’s another music connection to “Stranger Things”: Alabama’s Craig Johnson, who grew up in Decatur, has worked as a set dresser for the series. One of the songs Johnson recorded for his synth-pop project Space Knife, “I’m Taking Off,” was briefly featured on the show during its first season. Space Knife popped up in various ways on Seasons Two and Three, as well.
