Here’s what’s different about the new Coca Cola bottles

Coca-Cola is making environmentally friendly changes to its bottles.

Arriving at US retailers this week, all versions of Coca-Cola (i.e. zero sugar, diet, original, etc.) sold in 20-ounce bottles will be made from 100% recycled plastic, reports CNN.

The new bottles won’t look or feel different, although they will have a new label signifying the change. Neither the label itself nor the caps, however, will be made from 100% recycled plastic.

The new bottles mark a milestone for the beverage company, which has a goal to make half of its portfolio produced from recycled material by 2030.

“Consumers are looking for more sustainable solutions in their packaging, whether that is packaging made from recyclable material or packaging that can be reused,” said Kurt Ritter, the vice president of Coke’s sustainability efforts in North America, in an interview with CNN. “We know as a large global beverage company, we have a responsibility to lead and innovate.”

According to CNN, Coca-Cola estimates that the new bottles will reduce 83 million pounds of plastic used in its US supply chain, which is the equivalent of two billion bottles.
