May is National Military Appreciation Month, a time to thank all of those who serve their country. May also includes National Armed Forces Day on May 18.

In 1999, the late Sen. John McCain introduced formal legislation to designate May as National Military Appreciation Month to remind Americans of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the military. Armed Forces Day predates that declaration by decades, first commemorated in 1950 to combine separate days for the Army, Navy and Air Force.
