Here are drunkest states in U.S. and, no, Alabama’s not in top 47

Alabama isn’t just in the Bible Belt. It’s apparently also in the Sober Belt.

Or at least sober-ish.

A new ranking by 24/7 Tempo looked at the drunkest states in America, based on a review of the percentage of adults 18 and older who reported binge or heavy drinking within a 30-day period as reported in the 2023 County Health Rankings Roadmaps from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Overall, one in six U.S. adults indulges on binge drinking, defined as consuming five or more drinks on a single occasion for men or four or more drinks on a single occasion for women. Adults drink excessively at a national average rate of 19.8%.

Like overall alcohol use, the prevalence of binge drinking varied considerable by state to state.

24/7 Tempo found seven of the 10 states with the lowest binge-drinking rates are in the South. Mississippi, the fifth-lowest excessive-drinking state at 15.9%, has the lowest rate of alcohol-related driving deaths at 18.5%. All of the Southern states at the low end of excessive drinking rates also have the lowest median incomes in the nation. Utah has by far the lowest incidence of binge drinking at 11.9%. The state has a large Mormon population that does not drink alcohol.

The 10 drunkest states were:

1. Wisconsin – 25.2% adults drinking excessively

2. Iowa – 24.6% adults drinking excessively

3. South Dakota – 24.4% adults drinking excessively

4. Montana – 24.3% adults drinking excessively

5. North Dakota – 24.1% adults drinking excessively

6. Minnesota – 23.4% adults drinking excessively

7. Nebraska – 23.2% adults drinking excessively

8. Vermont – 23.2% adults drinking excessively

9. Illinois – 22.9% adults drinking excessively

10. Massachusetts – 22.5% adults drinking excessively

The most sober state in the country is Utah, where 11.9% of the population report drinking excessively. Oklahoma was 49th with 14.5%.

Alabama ranked as the 48th most sober state with 14.8% of adults reporting drinking excessively.

The drunkest metro area in Alabama, according to the ranking, is the Daphne-Fairhope-Foley area where 21.5% of adults reported drinking excessively.
