The city of Birmingham will be cracking down on new trash pickup regulations in the coming days. As the city finishes delivering new 96-gallon trash carts to the final round of homes, Rick Journey, Birmingham’s director of communications, previously said the grace period for adjusting to the new program is ending. If residents do not have their garbage in the city carts in the proper place and do not have special accommodations, their garbage will not be picked up.

The city’s trash pickup schedule has been reduced from twice a week to once a week as part of the new program, a practice that local urban analyst Christopher Burks previously said is common in most large cities across the country. Residents should receive their new pickup date in the information packet that comes with their cart, according to the city website.
