Herb Jones only non-center on NBA All-Defensive first team

New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones is the only first-team selection on the NBA’s All-Defensive team for the 2023-24 season who did not typically play center.

In Jones’ first appearance on the NBA All-Defensive team, the former Hale County High School and Alabama standout is joined on the first team by the Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo, Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert and San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama.

Jones is the second Alabama alumnus to earn first-team recognition on the NBA’s All-Defensive team, which has been selected annually since 1969, joining Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace, who was chosen in the 2009-10 season.

The NBA announced the All-Defensive team for the 2023-24 season on Tuesday.

Jones collected the fourth-most points in the voting by a panel of 99 sportswriters and broadcasters for the All-Defensive team. Jones received 66 first-team votes and 27 second-team votes for 159 points (with first-team votes counting two points and second-team votes counting one).

Gobert was a unanimous selection with 198 points. Wembanyama received 86 first-team votes and 12 second-team votes for 184 points, Adebayo received 73 first-team votes and 22 second-team votes for 168 points. Davis received 60 first-team votes and 31 second-team votes for 151 points.

The All-Defensive second-team selections were Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso, Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs, Boston Celtics guards Derrick Whie and Jrue Holiday and Minnesota forward Jalen McDaniels.

Jones is the fourth Pelicans player chosen for All Defensive first-team recognition, joining Chris Paul in 2008-09 and Davis and Holiday in 2017-18.

Jones’ recognition caps a successful campaign on the forward’s behalf by New Orleans, which promoted a “Not on Herb” defensive motto throughout his third NBA season.
