HeffStrong volleyball tournament features 3 No. 1 teams

A trio of No. 1 volleyball teams will compete at Spain Park’s annual HeffStrong Tournament this weekend.

No. 1 teams are Class 7A Bob Jones, Class 6A Mountain Brook and Class 5A Arab, along with 15 other ranked teams, playing in the two-day tournament beginning on Friday at Hoover’s Finley Center.

The tournament is named for former Alabama volleyball player Erin Heffner Ventress, who was an assistant coach at Berry Middle School (Spain Park feeder school) after serving as an assistant at the University of Montevallo.

Ventress was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and died February 8, 2014. She was recognized as an SEC Legend in 2015 and Spain Park bestows jersey No. 8 — Ventress’ Alabama number — on a player who represents resilience, grit and high standards on and off the court.
