Hee Haw comedian turned gospel singer dead at 78
Lulu Roman, the brash Hee Haw comedian turned inspirational gospel singer, has died. Roman was 78. Her death was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
Roman died Wednesday in Bellingham, Washington.
Born Bertha Louise Hable on May 6, 1946, Roman was placed in an orphanage in Dallas and later worked as a go-go dancer at a nightclub owned by Lee Harvey Oswald assassin Jack Ruby.
Roman, who was born with a thyroid problem that made it difficult for her to lose weight, later said she developed a drug problem while in high school. Her struggle with drugs would continue after she befriended country music superstar Buck Owens and landed a spot on the rural-themed weekly musical show “Hee Haw,” according to Hollywood Reporter.
Roman left Hee Haw in 1971 after she was arrested for drug possession. She became a born-again Christian in 1973 and was rehired on the program, going on to star in the 1978-1979 spinoff series, “Hee Haw Honeys.”
Roman released more than a dozen gospel albums and, in 1999, was inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Her autobiography, “This Is My Story: This Is My Song,” was published in 2019.
No cause of death was released.
