Heavy metal icon dead at 76: ‘He was with his family and surrounded by love’

Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness, died at the age of 76.

A heavy metal icon, and the face of Black Sabbath, died “surrounded by love,” his family said in a statement, per The Sun on Tuesday.

“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”

Osbourne’s wife, Sharon Osbourne, revealed in February that the Parkinson’s disease he was diagnosed with in 2023 had left him unable to walk but “doesn’t affect his voice.”

The news comes not long after he reunited with his original Black Sabbath bandmates – Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, for a final show earlier this month.

“You’ve got no idea how I feel,” Osbourne said at the time, per NBC News. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

He became a founding member of Black Sabbath in 1967. Hits like “Paranoid,” “War Pigs” and “Iron Man” made the band highly regarded as a major influence in the development of heavy metal music.
