Mobile heat

It took until Saturday, but Mobile reached its hottest all-time temperature after all, reports Leigh Morgan for AL.com.

The mercury rose to 106 degrees Fahrenheit Saturday afternoon, the hottest temp ever recorded in Mobile. The previous highest reading on record was 105 back in the summer of 2000.

Saturday’s 106 was followed up by Sunday’s 105, a record for Aug. 27. As a matter of fact, Mobile has broken or tied daily record highs for seven of the past eight days, breaking some records that’ve stood since 1938, 1925 and 1924.

Of course, the heat wasn’t contained to the Gulf Coast. Among other records being broken in the state over the weekend, Montgomery hit 102 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, breaking records set in 1943 and 1938, respectively.

Some good news, unless you love triple-digit temperatures, is that by Tuesday there should be some level of relief statewide. No need to bring in the houseplants yet. But even today, in parts of north Alabama it may stay in the bone-chilling 80s.

Coffeehouse strike

During a nationwide push to organize Starbucks employees, only two locations in Alabama have unionized — one in Birmingham and one in Scottsboro.

AL.com’s Amy Yurkanin reports that employees at the Scottsboro location went on strike Sunday to protest their working conditions and unfair labor practices. One of the employees said weren’t going to work their Sunday shifts but would be back to business as usual today.

She alleged that the workers there are overworked, that some employees have been unfairly fired, and that some have been injured because of water leaks at the store.

A resume builder

NASCAR Truck Series driver Grant Enfinger’s race team, GMS Racing, has announced it’s shutting down after this NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season.

Enfinger, who’s from Fairhope, might’ve helped his job search on Sunday. AL.com’s Mark Inabinett reports that his No. 23 Chevrolet was out front 95 of 175 laps and won the Clean Harbors 175 at the Milwaukee Mile.

The win puts Enfinger in the playoffs’ Round of Eight.

Quoting

“I’m blessed to say that I have recovered well and was back at it today.”

— U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, who had taken some time off and even spent time at the hospital after experiencing facial numbness beginning a few weeks ago.
