Heartbroken family says transgender Alabama teen’s shooting death was a hate crime
A juvenile suspect has been charged with murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Cameron Jamal Miikquise Thompson, who was found slain Monday in Tuscaloosa.
Authorities are not releasing the name of the teen suspect, even though the suspect is being charged as an adult.
Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy on Wednesday said the motive appears to be related to comments Thompson posted on social media regarding the suspect’s sexual orientation.
Thompson was a transgender woman, and her family members believe her shooting death was a hate crime.
Thompson graduated earlier this year from Job Corps and had worked for UPS for about a month. She lived with her mother and her 16-year-old brother.
“She was a very sweet person, very nice person, never met a stranger,’’ said her aunt, Tara Matthews. “She loved hair and nails.”
Thompson left her family’s home about 1 a.m. Monday, only taking her cell phone with her, family said.
The mother, who works overnight, noticed about noon Monday that Thompson’s purse and other person items were still in her bedroom.
“That wasn’t like her to leave her belongings,’’ Matthews said.
Family members repeated tried calling Thompson’s phone, but it went straight to voicemail.
“That was unusual, so we kept trying to call and see what was going on,’’ Matthews said.
The family called police about 4 p.m. Monday to file a missing persons report, and it was then they learned that a body had been found a couple of hours earlier.
“Once my sister identified the body, they came over and matched the person killed to my niece,’’ Matthews said.
Authorities found Thompson about 1 p.m. in the 600 block of East 35th Avenue.
Kennedy said Thompson had been shot several times. He said the shooting happened in the early-morning hours.
Matthews said the family is heartbroken over Thompson’s death.
“She was very quiet, very to herself, always very private,’’ Matthews said, adding that Thompson was loved by those who knew her.
“It’s very hard for her mother,’’ Matthews said. “She’s grieving and we’re just trying to be supportive.”
A GoFundMe has been started to help with Thompson’s funeral. Donations can be made here.
