HBCUs recruit white Florida QB caught rapping the N-word
Two HBCUs have offered scholarships to a white four-star quarterback recruit caught on video singing N-word, which later went viral.
Last fall, Marcus Stokes, a highly ranked high school quarterback from Florida, post a video of himself rapping along to a song whose lyrics contained the N-word.
After the video circulated widely on social media, The University of Florida, a PWI in Gainesville, rescinded a scholarship offer previously extended to Stokes. Other Power Five schools stopped their pursuits of recruiting Stokes too.
According to 247Sports, Stokes was ranked as the 23rd-best quarterback in the class of 2023 nationally.
After Florida revoked his scholarship, Stokes issued an apology in which he stated, “I was in my car listening to rap music, rapping along to the words and posted a video of it to social media, I deeply apologize for the words in the song which I chose to say.”
Despite those actions, two HBCUs subsequently extended offers to Stokes. The first, from Albany State University in Georgia, Stokes announced in a tweet on Jan. 24. A week later the head coach Quinn Gray withdrew his offer and released a statement calling his decision to recruit Stokes “unacceptable.”
Gray added that “the consequences of my actions brought pain to our University. I was trying to help a student get back in competition, and in my haste, I did not consider the impact the decision would have on all of you.”
Meanwhile, Alabama A&M University, an HBCU in Huntsville, Alabama, and the University of West Florida, a PWI in Pensacola have also extended offers to Stokes.
