Hazel Green, Sparkman football game suspended by ‘major disruption’

Friday night’s season opener between the Hazel Green and Sparkman high school football teams was suspended due to a “major disruption,” the Madison County school system posted on Facebook.

It was not clear what caused the incident at the game, which was held at Sparkman.

“On two separate occasions, a large number of students in the open area on the south end of the stadium began running and causing a major disruption,” the post read.

School resource officers and Madison County deputies are working to get to the bottom of the situation, the system stated.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to clear the stadium and suspend the game.

“This incident will be thoroughly investigated, and proper action will be taken. We will release more information as we receive it.”

In social media posts, people attending the game said there was an altercation between students.

Sparkman was leading 31-0 when the game was suspended.
