Hazel Green girls on brink of AHSAA basketball history
The Hazel Green girls’ basketball team is one victory away from Alabama High School Athletic Association history after beating Bob Jones 48-36 at home Wednesday night.
The five-time defending Class 6A state champions have won 85 consecutive basketball games. Lauderdale County won 86 straight from 2013-15 to hold the top spot in AHSAA play – for both girls’ and boys’ teams.
Among the other records held by Lauderdale County girls’ basketball, the Tigers won five consecutive state titles. Hazel Green and Pisgah could surpass the Rogersville program if they win championships this season. The Lauderdale County dynasty includes 13 state crowns overall, the last coming in 2016.
The longest winning streak for boys’ teams recognized by the AHSAA, according to the official website, is 73 games by A.G. Parrish of Selma from 1943-47. Second-best for the AHSAA boys is Parker from 1963-65. Tuscaloosa Academy holds the high-school consecutive game win streak record with 100, a three-year streak that ended in December 1983.
Hazel Green will play at Fairfield on Friday at 6 p.m. with the chance to tie the AHSAA mark and faces Riverdale of Murfreesboro, Tenn., at 1:30 p.m. at home on Saturday.
The last time Hazel Green lost a game was on Dec. 19, 2020, when Ellsworth of Nashville visited and came away with a 50-47 victory during the 2020-21 season. The last in-state team to beat coach Tim Miller and the Trojans is Ramsay. The Rams beat Hazel Green on Jan. 13, 2020, and on Jan. 25, 2020, which was during the 2019-20 season.
The national girls’ record for consecutive wins, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, is 218 wins. Baskin, La., earned that distinction from 1947-53 under Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame coach Edna Tarbutton. Baskin won nine state titles under Tarbutton, eight in a row.
Miller, now in his 10th season at Hazel Green, has won nine AHSAA state titles at three different schools. Miller’s first title came in 2006 at Jeff Davis in Montgomery. He won three championships coaching at Bob Jones in Madison, in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
Miller’s career record is 712-98 – an .879 winning percentage. Miller has won 92.3 percent of his games at Hazel Green (326-27).
Against Bob Jones on Wednesday, the Trojans improved to 26-0 on the season with the win over the 7A Patriots.
Leah Brooks – a starter for the entire streak – delivered a double-double to lead Hazel Green, scoring 19 points and claiming 14 rebounds. Zyriah Price added 15 for the Trojans.
Jordyn Fields led Bob Jones with 9 points. Jae Smith and Saniya Bone had 8 points each.
