Hartselle closes out Minor with Jack Smith no-hitter
Hartselle left-hander Jack Smith tossed a perfect game last week to close out the Tigers’ opening-round playoff sweep of Pinson Valley. How did the University of Arkansas-bound pitcher follow up that gem? He threw a no-hitter to send Minor packing on Friday in Round 2 of the Class 6A playoffs.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Smith struck out 12 batters and walked one as Hartselle beat Minor 10-0 and 10-0 in a pair of run-rule wins at Hartselle’s Sparkman Park.
Minor came into the doubleheader on a 27-game winning streak with a 31-4 record. Hartselle (30-8) also found a way to keep new AHSAA stolen base record-holder Tylan Amerson from hurting them on the basepaths – stop him from reaching first. The speedy junior, who finished the season with 86 steals, was 0-for-2 in both losses.
Minor committed six errors in the Game 2 loss and five in Game 1.
Sophomore pitcher Jace Meadows was barely outdone by Smith as he threw a one-hitter in the Game 1 win. Meadows struck out six and walked one over six innings as the home team scored its 10th run in the bottom of the sixth.
In Game 2, with Hartselle playing as the visiting team, the Tigers scored three runs in the top of the first, one in the second and pushed across six in the fourth.
Peyton Steele homered and drove in three runs for the winners, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Coleman Mizell was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Cade Miles and Greyson Howard had a pair of RBIs apiece for second-ranked Hartselle.
Ethan Bucher took the loss in Game 2, giving up 10 runs – four earned – on six hits. He struck out two and walked six in 3.1 innings.
In Game 1, Mizell went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs. Howard was 3-for-4 with two doubles two runs scored and two RBIs. Cade Miles was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Lawson Williams doubled and drove in a run.
Kareem Keye took the loss for Minor, giving up nine earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and five walks in 5.1 innings.
QD Wilson got Minor’s lone hit of the day.
Hartselle will play Oxford in the third round.
