The 3 percentage point difference between the two candidates is within the survey’s margin of error of 3.7%.

Overall, Harris’ lead among likely voters is bolstered by her strengths among Black voters (80% to 12%) and young voters (50% to 39%). Trump leads by 8 percentage points (51% to 43%) with white voters, a number that represents a decline from four years ago when the same poll showed the former president led by 13% among white voters.

Harris was also seen as the “change candidate” by voters, 48% to 44%. Overall, pollsters said voters prefer a candidate who will bring change to America – 47% – over a candidate who will bring politics in Washington back to normal – 44%.

A flash poll by CNN showed similar results on the debate. Sixty-three percent thought Harris turned in the better performance compared to 37% for Trump. Ninety-six of Harris supporters who watched the debate thought she had done a better job compared to 69% of Trump supporters who thought he won.

Nationally, FiveThirtyEight’s average of polls shows Harris leading 2.6 percentage points, 47% to 44.4%. Ninety five percent of the national poll averages fall within this range.
