Harbaugh addresses NFL rumors following Rose Bowl win
Rumors have been swirling for weeks regarding Jim Harbaugh’s future at Michigan, and the Wolverines coach was asked about the subject again following Monday’s Rose Bowl win over Alabama.
The 60-year-old Harbaugh has been linked to various NFL teams that currently have openings or might by season’s end, including the Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers. When asked about his “future” on Monday, however, Harbaugh — whose Wolverines will face the Texas-Washington winner for the national title on Jan. 8 — was evasive.
“My future consists of a happy flight back to Ann Arbor, Michigan,” Harbaugh said with a giant grin on his face. “Can’t wait.”
According to a report late Saturday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Harbaugh has retained the services of Don Yee, the agent for Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton (as well as Michigan and NFL legend Tom Brady). Yee is based in Pasadena, Calif., also the site of Monday’s Rose Bowl.
Harbaugh is a Michigan graduate who is 87-25 with Big Ten titles in each of the last three seasons at his alma mater. However, he sat out six games this season while serving two separate suspensions for alleged rules violations, one levied by the NCAA and the other by the Big Ten.
It’s believed that the sign-stealing scandal that engulfed the final month of the regular season for the Wolverines might soon ramp up to include an NCAA investigation, which ultimately could result in further sanctions against Harbaugh and Michigan. Harbaugh coached the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14, going 44-19-1 and reaching the Super Bowl in his second season.
