Hank Williams’ grandson and Cirque du Soleil: New show features music by country royalty
Country tunes and Cirque du Soleil? This might seem like an odd pairing, but the theatrical troupe has a track record for combining music and acrobatics in unexpected and satisfying ways.
Sam Williams — a singer-songwriter, the grandson of the legendary Hank Williams and the son of Hank Jr. — certainly thinks Cirque du Soleil is ready to dive into the country realm. He’s created music for “Songblazers,” a new country-themed show that’s set to debut in July at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville.
A song called “Carnival Heart,” written by Williams, PJ Harding and Ned Houston, will be featured in the show, according to a press release. Williams is set to release a single of “Carnival Heart” on April 12, as well.
“The title idea came to me pretty easily after becoming acquainted with Cirque du Soleil,” Williams said in the release. “Where I come from, most people don’t get to go to the circus. We go to county fairs and carnivals, and the carnival in a small town is filled with joy, excitement, mystery, euphoria, you name it. That feeling is one you always remember, and I think the roller coaster of emotions lines up with what you want to feel seeing such an incredibly beautiful production such as Cirque’s.”
A full list of songs included in the production hasn’t been released, so it’s unclear if Hank Sr. or Hank Jr. will be represented on the soundtrack. We do know, however, that “Songblazers” is set to travel to seven cities this year after its run in Nashville. Birmingham is on the agenda for Sept. 12-15, with seven performances scheduled at the BJCC Concert Hall.
Tickets for the Birmingham shows go on sale Thursday, March 28, at 10 a.m. CT via Ticketmaster, according to the BJCC. A presale is underway; prices range from $49-$109, according to the Ticketmaster site.
“Songblazers,” written and directed by Amy Tinkham, “pays tribute to the legendary and modern trailblazers of country music,” a press release says. The show also traces “the journey of two main characters as they forge their own path to country recognition.” As is typical for Cirque du Soleil — the creator of shows such as the Beatles’ “Love” and Michael Jackson’s “MJ One” — music will be combined with acrobatics and aerial performances.
Williams, 27, made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2020 and released his debut album, “Glasshouse Children,” in 2021 via Universal Music Group Nashville. (The album included “Happy All the Time,” a duet with Dolly Parton.) He followed that with a handful singles, including a cover of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”
As a member of the Hank Williams family tree, Sam Williams is country royalty in Alabama and elsewhere. Aside from Alabama native Hank Sr. and former Cullman resident Hank Jr., the Williams clan has produced artists such as Hank III, Holly Williams and Hilary Williams. Along with Sam Williams, all are the children of Hank Jr., who’s been married four times.
