A Cullman County grand jury indicted Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail on 15 counts of using his position or office for personal gain, the county’s top prosecutor announced Tuesday.

Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker said he was limited in what he can say about the case against Nail, who is mayor of Hanceville, a city of about 3,200 people between Birmingham and Huntsville.

“However, as a matter of public policy and good government — elected officials are entrusted to perform their duties honestly and above reproach,” Crocker said in a statement. “When that bond of trust is broken, our society suffers limitless harm.”

The charges against Nail were not uploaded to electronic state court records as of late Tuesday afternoon.

“Anyone with information regarding corrupt practices by public officials is encouraged to contact the Alabama Ethics Commission or the Alabama Attorney General’s Office,” Crocker continued. “My office — working with our state partners — is committed to ensuring that the violators of the public trust be held accountable under the law.”
