Hall of Famer Danny Powell returning to private school as head coach
Alabama High School Hall of Famer Danny Powell is a head coach again.
The former Leroy and Jackson High head coach told AL.com Tuesday afternoon he has accepted the job as head coach at Jackson Academy.
Powell spent three years as head coach at JA from 1989-1991.
“I knew some people at Jackson Academy and some had talked to me before,” Powell said. “We talked again this time and it sounded like what I wanted to do. I went over there today, and they threw a t-shirt on me and took my picture so I guess it’s official.”
Powell replaces Jacob Webb at Jackson Academy. Webb was named last month as head coach at Pearl River Central (Miss.).
Powell has won 177 games in 20 years as a head football coach at six different stops — McIntosh Christian, Lee-Scott, Jackson Academy, Leroy, Jackson and Clarke Prep. His teams won four state football championships in his five years as head coach at Leroy (2006-2010). He then led Jackson High to the Class 4A state title in 2011.
He went 82-20 in eight years as head coach at Jackson, a run that included three additional semifinal runs and a quarterfinal run. He retired following the 2018 season, accepting the job at Clarke Prep in the AISA. After two years there, he returned as an assistant coach to both of his previous stops — one year at Leroy and this past year at Jackson.
“I missed being a head coach some,” he said. “But I did enjoy myself at both those places and obviously had a little of the load taken off of me that you have as a head coach. I guess this is a chance to have a little more control again while I’m still young enough to do it.”
Powell already has had success in the Alabama Independent School Association, leading Lee-Scott to the AISA-A state title in 1988. He also led Leroy to three state baseball titles.
He will turn 75 in November.
