Gunshots outside Fairfield event center prompt false active shooter scare
Shots fired outside a party at Fairfield event center Sunday night drew a large police presence.
Just before 9 p.m., Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Goudy venue on Gary Avenue on a report of an active shooter.
It was also reported that one person had been wounded, said Lt. Joni Money.
Deputies, along with law enforcement officers from surrounding agencies, flocked to the scene.
Money said deputies determined that the initial reports of the circumstances surrounding the shooting were incorrect.
The investigation showed a fight occurred inside the business earlier but was dispersed. Later, there were shots fired into the air outside the facility.
Deputies searched area but did not find anyone wounded. They also check with hospitals to make sure no one had showed up with a gunshot wound from the Gary Avenue incident.
Money said was also determined that there was no visible property damage from the shots.
An event called After Party was being held at Goudy from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Social media posts indicated the gathering could have been for youth.
Money said sheriff’s officials are thankful for the response from other agencies on what was initially thought to be a possible large-scale event.
“We are relieved that this did not turn out to be the case in this instance,’’ she said. “Even though no one was injured, it could have easily been a different circumstance.”
“Firing a gun inside of most city limits is illegal and at the very least, it is reckless and irresponsible,’’ Money said. “We are lucky no one was injured in this case.”
