Gunfire on Interstate 59 in Birmingham leaves 1 dead, 1 injured
A shooting on Interstate 59 southbound in Birmingham left one person dead.
Birmingham police were dispatched just after 10 p.m. Saturday I-59 near the First Avenue North exit ramp.
Officers arrived to find a vehicle down an embankment off the interstate. Initial reports indicated one person died and a second person was injured.
The slain man was pronounced dead on the scene. The second victim sustained non-life-threatening injures.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said one vehicle opened fire on another.
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted.
The victims’ vehicle came to a stop between the interstate and the 8500 block of First Avenue South.
Investigators shut down the southbound lanes to look for shell casings. Shortly before 11:30 p.m., they reopened one lane of southbound traffic.
Police have also set up a large scene along First Avenue South.
The victim is Birmingham’s 75th homicide this year. Of those, seven have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
