Gunfire near southwest Birmingham apartment complex leaves 1 dead
Shots rang out near a southwest Birmingham apartment complex Monday night, leaving one person dead in the city’s second homicide probe of the day.
Birmingham police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched shortly before 10 p.m. to the 200 block of Third Avenue S.W. That location is the University Crossings apartments, formerly known as Montello Gardens, in the Titusville community.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said Shot Spotter – the city’s gunfire detection system – alerted police to gunfire. While officers were en route, dispatchers were notified that someone had been shot.
Once on the scene, police found the wounded victim on the sidewalk near the road. He was rushed to UAB Hospital where he was quickly pronounced dead.
Wade said the victim has not yet been identified but appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s.
“The only thing the citizens reported was seeing the victim lying on the sidewalk,’’ she said.
Shot Spotter registered two different alerts – one with two shots, and the second with three shots.
It is the fourth time since 2022 that the apartments have been the scene of a homicide investigation. The last one was during Spring Break 2023 when a teen was killed in a shootout.
Early Monday, the body of 20-year-old Mahogany Jackson was found in an illegal dumpside, also in southwest Birmingham. She had been reported missing on Sunday, and was fatally shot.
The victim is Birmingham’s 17th homicide this year. Of those, one has been ruled justifiable and therefore not deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 22 homicides including the 17 in Birmingham.
