Gunfire near busy southwest Birmingham intersection leaves 1 dead

A man was shot to death Tuesday afternoon near a busy southwest Birmingham intersection.

West Precinct officers were dispatched just before 2 p.m. to 40th Street and Jefferson Avenue on a report of a person shot.

Officers arrived at the location went to a small business at the intersection and found a man unresponsive on the ground under that building’s awning.  Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the man dead on the scene.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the victim, whose identity has not been released, was shot at least one time. Police marked several shell casings near where the body was found.

Fitzgerald said details are limited.

“We know where the victim was standing is an area where our patrol officers say many people hang out during the day,’’ he said.

He said anyone who was out there that may have left the scene needs to come forward if they have information.

The man is the city’s 93rd homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 132 homicides including the 93 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
