Gunfire leaves 1 dead, 1 seriously injured in Birmingham’s first homicide of 2023

A double shooting in Birmingham Monday night left one man dead and another injured in the city’s first homicide of 2023.

At 9:46 p.m., Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, alerted police to shots fired in the 100 block of 59th Street North in Woodlawn. A citizen also called in a report of shooting taking place.

When officers arrived, said Sgt. Monica Law, they found two males suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. The vehicle had come to a rest in an area of trees and brush in the parking lot of a small apartment complex.

One of the victims was pronounced dead on the scene. The second victim was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Law said no motive has been determined and no suspects are in custody.

The victim’s parents were among dozens of people who rushed to the shooting scene.

The city’s first homicide of 2023 came almost 48 hours into the new year. In 2022, the city had two homicides in the first several hours of the new year.

Birmingham ended 2022 with the families and friends of 144 homicide victims left grieving.

The year was deadliest in recent history and only a few homicides short of being the deadliest in the Magic City’s entire history.

The highest number of homicides recorded in recent memory was 141 in 1991.

The city’s all-time annual record for homicides was set in 1933 recorded when Birmingham had 148 slayings.
