Gunfire inside McCalla home leaves 1 dead

A 33-year-old man was shot to death Friday morning when authorities say he broke into a McCalla home.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 4:25 a.m. to a report of a person shot at a house in the 6600 block of Newbridge Drive.

They arrived to find the intruder dead.

Lt. Joni Money said it appears the man broke into the home and got into a physical altercation with the residents once inside. The intruder did know at least one of the people who live there.

During that fight, one of the residents pulled a gun and fired shots.

The name of the slain man has not yet been released.

The investigation is ongoing.

The man is the 27th homicide so far this year in all of Jefferson County.
