Gunfire in southwest Birmingham neighborhood leaves 1 dead, 1 seriously injured
Gunfire rang out in a southwest Birmingham neighborhood late Sunday, leaving one man dead and another seriously injured.
Birmingham’s West Precinct officers were dispatched at 10:40 p.m. to the 3100 block of Steiner Avenue on a report of shots fired in the area. While they were en route, the called was upgraded to a person shot, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Police arrived on the scene to find an adult male lying in the roadway. He was next to a vehicle that had been shot into multiple times.
That victim was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
While officers were beginning their investigation, Fitzgerald said, they learned another gunshot victim had show up at Princeton Baptist Medical Center. That victim, also an adult male, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“We’re in the early stages of this investigation but we do believe that the two males maybe connected to the original scene on Steiner Avenue,’’ Fitzgerald said. “Detectives will speak to witnesses and try to piece together what took place.”
“We believe two parties may have fired shots at one another,’’ he said.
The deadly shooting is Birmingham’s 40th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and three others have been ruled justifiable.
In all of Jefferson County there have been 55 homicides, including the 40 in Birmingham.
