Gunfire in Calera neighborhood leaves 2 injured, 2 in custody
Authorities are on the scene of a shooting in a Calera neighborhood that left two people injured.
The gunfire erupted about just after 3 p.m. Monday in the Meriweather subdivision, off County Road 16.
Police Chief David Hyche said one male, reportedly shot in the stomach, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. The second male was transported by ambulance.
Their ages and the severity of their injuries were not immediately released.
Hyche said officers quickly received a description of the suspects. Two other males were taken into custody in the neighborhood within 20 minutes.
The chief said the investigation is in its early stages, and said it will take time to sort out what happened.
The Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force will be assisting in processing the crime scene.
“Shootings like this are a rare occurrence in Calera, and we want to keep it that way,’’ Hyche said.
