Gulf Shores spring break crackdown leads to 47 arrests; one federal parolee found with handgun

Gulf Shores police announced last week they were going to beef up their presence along the beachfront this past weekend.

Those efforts led to some 47 arrests, as well as more than 200 traffic stops, the Gulf Shores Police Department announced Tuesday.

“Our primary focus during the spring break season has always been education on the local laws and ordinances, asking for voluntary compliance and providing warnings where appropriate,” police said in a Facebook post.

“There were a few people that did not get the message and, if they did, failed to grasp the implications of their actions.”

Between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday, officers conducted more than 200 traffic stops, which resulted in 39 citations, as well as 131 verbal warnings and 51 written warnings.

The 47 arrests over the weekend included:

  • 25 for underage possession of alcohol
  • 14 on drug-related charges
  • 6 for other offenses
  • 1 for theft
  • 1 for public intoxication

In addition, between Gulf Shores police and Baldwin County deputies, three handguns were recovered from people prohibited from possessing firearms — including one subject who is on federal parole, police said.

“We are a family-oriented community that welcomes everyone to come enjoy our beautiful beaches, but please remember to respect our laws and ordinances,” the department said. “We have a zero-tolerance, no warnings policy for Underage Possession of Alcohol, Drugs, DUI and weapons violations.”
