Gulf Shores shuts out Eufaula to reach school’s first title game
Eufaula ran 13 plays before the Gulf Shores offense even touched the ball in Friday’s Class 5A state semifinal game.
Three of those 13 plays came inside the Dolphins’ 5-yard line.
None of the 13 resulted in points.
Ballgame.
The Gulf Shores defense made two goal-line stands and Kolin Wilson ran for five touchdowns as the top-ranked Dolphins reached the first state championship in school history with a 45-0 shutout of Eufaula at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.
“It’s the biggest thing that has happened in Gulf Shores history,” senior defensive lineman Otto Brewer said. “Being undefeated was bigger than any of us could have imagined, but we aren’t satisfied yet. We really want to get that state championship.”
The Dolphins (14-0) advance to play reigning champ Ramsay (12-1) in the 5A state title game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The Rams defeated Guntersville 35-14 in Friday’s other semifinal matchup.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to come out here and do what we set out to do back in the summer and, hopefully, we can bring it home next week,” Wilson said.
The 5-foot-9 junior running back was a huge factor again for Gulf Shores. He finished with 281 yards on just 20 carries, scoring on runs of 27, 74, 46, 28 and 1 yard.
“He’s got great vision,” Gulf Shores coach Mark Hudspeth said. “Give credit to his offensive line as well. They opened a lot of holes. They (Eufaula) have great movement up front. We didn’t have a lot of success running it outside, but we were able to run it inside real effectively tonight.”
Eufaula (10-4) took the opening kickoff and picked up three quick first downs before the Dolphins forced a punt. However, N.C. State commit Ronnie Royal slipped slightly and fumbled the kick. The Tigers covered it at the Gulf Shores 3.
But Gulf Shores stopped Marquia “Red” Harris for one yard on two carries. After an incompletion by quarterback Browning Anderson, Thomas Wingate missed a short field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless.
“I thought we played a pretty good game tonight,” Hudspeth said. “Those two goal-line stands were about as good as I’ve seen in a long time at any level. The way we overcame the first mishap and then turned that into a score and just sort of gained the momentum and never let it go. I’m proud of our team. We played a complete game tonight.”
Following the stop, Gulf Shores moved 80 yards in six plays. Wilson capped the drive with his first touchdown at the 4:08 mark for a 7-0 lead.
“That stop was clearly the turning point,” Eufaula coach Jerrel Jernigan said.
It wasn’t the only red zone stop by the Dolphin defense. After Royal made it 14-0 with a 57-yard run on Gulf Shores’ next possession, The Tigers mounted their best drive of the night. They moved from their 37 to another first-and-goal and the Dolphin 3.
Anderson lost three yards on two carries and then had his third-down pass broken up by Royal. After an offsides penalty against Gulf Shores, Jernigan opted to pass on another field goal and go for the touchdown. Altorian Slaughter was shoved out of bounds by Royal and company for no gain.
“I think it showed how tough our defense is,” Brewer said of the two defensive stands. “I think coach VG’s (Brian VanGorder) gameplan and us wanting to hit them hard were big factors.”
Wilson raced 74 yards moments later to cap a 97-yard drive. Gulf Shores led 21-0 and the rout was on. The Dolphins had a 28-0 lead at the half. The game was never in doubt after that.
“Take your hats off to Gulf Shores,” Jernigan said. “They’ve got a good football team and are well coached. They were leaning on us up front a little. I thought we were moving the ball offensively. We just didn’t capitalize with the turnover early.”
Eufaula finished with just 125 total yards. Anderson, harassed throughout the night by the Gulf Shores defense, finished just 7-of-14 for 44 yards. He was intercepted once. Harris gained 52 yards on 14 carries.
Star of the game: It was clearly Wilson, who almost effortlessly penetrated the Eufaula defense time and time again for his 12th 100-yard rushing game of the season and second 200-yard game. He now has 1,928 yards in 14 games.
“Great blocks up front and great gameplan by my coach (offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield),” Wilson said. “I’m just proud of the guys up front. They battled the whole game and made it easy for me.”
Key sequence: Already trailing 14-0, Eufaula had a chance to cut the lead in half midway through the second quarter. The Tigers ran four plays inside the Gulf Shores’ 6. They couldn’t get closer than the 3. Five plays later, it was 21-0.
Stat sheet: Royal finished with 118 yards and a TD on 11 carries. The defense was led by Landon Everett with 9 tackles and an interception. Jordan Watson had a pair of sacks. Isaiah Hammac also had nine tackles.
Did you know? Gulf Shores has outscored its four playoff opponents 169-21. The Dolphins have outscored their opponents 555-124 for the season.
THEY SAID IT:
“A lot of work has gone into this for us to be 31-6 in three years and 25-2 in the last two. A lot of work by our coaching staff, our players, our community. I’m so glad they are seeing the benefits from the work they put in.” – Hudspeth.
“I don’t know anything about them other than they are the defending state champs. That’s enough right there.” – Hudspeth on facing Ramsay in the title game net week.
“I don’t know what to think about it. I’ve never been to state before, but I’m super excited.” – Brewer on reaching the Class 5A championship game.
“I have to give thanks to my seniors. We had an outstanding year. No one thought we would be here, but a 10-win season is special. We grinded all year. We made play after play and kept winning. We came up short tonight.” – Jernigan.
