Gulf Shores High School practice facility collapses during $131 million construction project

Inspectors are investigating a collapse at the construction site of a new south Alabama high school campus, according to pictures of the incident on social media.

The collapse occurred specifically at the practice facility area of a $131 million campus that is currently being constructed.

In February 2024, the council approved a contract with Auburn-based Rabren Construction to build the project for a grand opening in 2026.

Gulf Shores City Schools Superintendent, Matt Akin, told Gulf Coast Media that the incident did not affect other parts of the facility and is not connected to the main school.

“He said inspectors and contractors are working to determine the cause,” Gulf Coast Media said. “It was not immediately clear if it was due to last week’s snowstorm or if there were workers on site.”

It is unclear if the collapse will affect the construction timeline.

Last week the roof of the Mobile Civic Center, which is also under construction, collapsed under the weight of snow during a historic snow event for south Alabama.
