Grunge heavyweights add spring date in Alabama
A band that defined the heavier end of the grunge sound in the ‘90s has added an Alabama date to its spring schedule.
The May itinerary for Alice in Chains already featured some significant festival dates, the Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival in Columbus, Ohio, May 11 and the Welcome to Rockville fest in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 16. Newly announced dates include a May 15 stop in Dothan on the way to Daytona Beach.
The band will perform in the Dothan Civic Center arena with special guests Chained Saint. General public ticket sales begin at 9 a.m. Central time Friday, Feb. 21. The band announced an artist presale starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, and the venue has announced another starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, using the password Dothan25.
Ticketing links can be found at the venue website. Prices were not immediately available.
Though members of Alice in Chains have not always accepted the grunge label, they rose to prominence in the early ‘90s along with other groups such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden, whose music tended to be grittier and darker than the mainstream metal and hard rock of the ‘80s. Alice in Chains had a Top 10 album with “Dirt” in 1992, an eponymous followup that hit No. 1 in 1995, and a 1996 live album, “MTV Unplugged,” that hit No. 3.
The addiction-related illness and eventual death of charismatic founding vocalist Layne Staley caused the band to be inactive for years, but it re-formed with new vocalist William DuVall in 2005, releasing two more Top 10 albums and one, 2018’s “Rainier Fog,” that made it to No. 12.
