Groundhog Day 2023: Did Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow?
Punxsutawney Phil, the celebrated star of Groundhog Day across Pennsylvania and beyond, has once again been consulted for his prediction for the end of this year’s winter.
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club gathered once again at Phil’s home in Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to see if the beloved groundhog saw his shadow.
And here is the result: according to his official handlers in the Groundhog Club, Phil saw his shadow which means, according to tradition, we are in for six more weeks of winter.
Crowds gathered as early as 3 a.m. for the event, which draws dozens from miles around in the cold early hours of a February morning.
Now, six more weeks of winter may not sound great. But there’s still hope for people ready for an earlier end to the cold. While the lore of Punxsutawney Phil states that he’s never wrong, the Groundhog Club’s interpretations of those predictions often are. History shows that (their interpretation of) Phil’s predictions are only correct about 40 percent of the time – depending on how you crunch the numbers, that is. You can find out more here:
