Greg Sankey asked about SEC’s interest in Florida State

Florida State trustees made it clear Wednesday the Seminoles aren’t happy in the ACC.

Later in the day, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey was about his league’s interest in FSU.

“I have been clear that we are focused on our growth to 16 as we transition Oklahoma and Texas into the Conference,” Sankey told Heather Dinich of ESPN. “Further expansion has not been a central topic in the SEC other than regularly updating our campus leadership on national developments. We are proud of the stability the SEC provides our membership and incredibly excited about our future.”

Per earlier AL.com reporting, the Seminoles declined a chance to join the SEC in the early 1990s, and with Florida already in that league, Tallahassee is not considered a priority TV market.

ACC schools are expected to make $30 million each off the current TV deal, which is well below what members of the Big Ten ($58 million), SEC ($49 million) and Big 12 ($45 million) earned last year.

FSU trustee and former Seminoles quarterback Drew Weatherford made the strongest statement on the potential move for the school.

“It’s not a matter of if we leave (the ACC), in my opinion,” Weatherford said. “It’s a matter of how and when we leave. Not everyone may agree with that, but I feel really strongly about it.”
