Greg McElroy fed up with anti-Alabama perception, says Alphonse Taylor was âlaziest dude on the roster’
(Update: Alphonse Taylor followed up with AL.com to say Greg McElroy has apologized. “I would feel wrong if I didn’t provide that update,” Taylor said.)
Greg McElroy’s take on former Alabama lineman Kadyn Proctor hasn’t been met with skepticism.
On Wednesday, the former Crimson Tide quarterback tried to dispel a “narrative” that he hates his school. In doing so, he called out former Alabama lineman Alphonse Taylor, who clapped back.
“I’m a little bit tired of this narrative of I don’t like my school,” he said on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” on WJOX 94.5-FM. “I want to address it. I’m really fed up with it. I really am.”
He called out the clowns and “Barstool Bamas.”
“The Alphonse Taylors, Shank?” he continued. “Who I don’t even remember playing at Alabama. I just remember him being described as the laziest dude on the roster. That’s what I remember. (Taylor) is trying to remain relevant. It’s perfectly fine. I don’t care. He uses Bama. I don’t. That’s perfectly OK.”
Taylor, now an offensive line coach at Alma Bryant High School in Irvington, took exception to the comments.
“It’s a shame that a supposed professional like Greg McElroy would stoop so low as to taking personal shots at me and my time at Bama because of a difference in opinions,” Taylor told AL.com on Thursday. “To say I was lazy and did nothing special – even though I was the starting right guard for the 2015 national championship team, which also produced a 2,000-yard rusher and Heisman winner in Derrick Henry, while the offensive line unit (which he led in pancake blocks, he added) won the Joe Moore Award for best offensive line in the country – is something I would consider a lazy and emotional take.
“He doesn’t know me or anything about me.”
Prior his comments to AL.com, Taylor posted to social media.
“Oh, brother, looks like I hit a soft spot, huh Greg, ol pal?” Taylor posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “Got your panties in a bunch? Trying to take little cheap shots on my character when you don’t know the first thing about me. What do I use Bama for exactly? What clout am I seeking?”
At the root of the issue is the SEC Network analyst’s take on Proctor, who left Tuscaloosa for Iowa. The offensive lineman said Iowa, who he was committed to before signing with Alabama, stayed in touch throughout the season.
People on social media, including Taylor, called it tampering. McElroy said it is about relationships.
“A lot of people are all bent out of shape about the tampering. Y’all – it’s about relationships. It’s all about relationships,” McElroy said. “Iowa stayed in touch with Kadyn Proctor, maybe he was a little homesick. He’s now going to go home.”
The take has also called into question his stance on Alabama, in general, which he takes exception to.
“I love my school,” McElroy said. “I love my school endlessly.”
He said he is raising his boys to be Alabama fans. His wife, sister and family all went to Alabama.
“Your opinion of me is none of my business,” he said. “It does not matter. It doesn’t. All people critical of me were probably critical of Kadyn Proctor on Twitter when he was giving up five sacks against South Florida.”
Last week, Taylor explained to AL.com that the mass exodus from Alabama, via the transfer portal in light of Nick Saban’s retirement, was no longer about winning.
