Grandview Medical employee sexually assaulted at least 3 females at hospital, Birmingham police say
A former Grandview Medical Center employee has been charged with the sexual assaults of three females at the hospital.
Cornell Richards, 39, is charged with five felony crimes – first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse.
Few details are being released surrounding the incidents, but the investigation began in September. Police said all of the attacks happened in September.
Police did not say whether the victims were patients or other employees. Efforts to reach the hospital for comment were not immediately successful.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said investigators with the department’s Special Victims Unit learned that a sexual assault had reportedly taken place at the hospital at the hands of Richards.
Detectives then learned of at least two additional victims who claim they were also sexually assault by Richards.
Police said Richards was employed at the hospital at the time of the assaults.
“We believe he was employed in a capacity that allowed him to care for patients,’’ according to a BPD press release. “Sadly, we believe there are additional victims out there.”
Efforts to reach hospital officials for comment were not immediately successful.
The Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team arrested Richards.
He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 11:04 a.m. Monday and remains held without bond.
Anyone with information about Richards is asked to call SVU detectives at 205-297-8413 or at One Place Family Justice Center at 205-453-7261.
