Grandson of famous Southern Baptist pastor apologizes for selling his items on eBay

The grandson of a well-known Southern Baptist pastor who died in April has apologized for trying to sell some of the Rev. Charles Stanley’s former belongings on eBay.

Matt Broderson, 29, shared an apology in a YouTube video, saying his family “was not happy with me.”

“A lot of people I love, a lot of people I care about, a lot of people who are very close to me have pointed out that this is disgusting behavior. So, I just want to go on the record to say I admit I shouldn’t have done that,” he said, according to the Christian Post.

Stanley, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta and two-time president of the Southern Baptist Convention, died April 18th at age 90. A week after his death, Broderson listed two of his grandfather’s possessions – an engraved pocket watch and a framed signed portrait – for sale on e-Bay.

In his video, Broderson said he didn’t think about the ramifications of his actions in listing the items on the online selling site.

“I was thinking about me, me, me, and, ‘Can I get some money please so that I can pay my bills,’” he said.

Despite the apology, however, he did not remove the items from eBay, saying he didn’t “want to take the opportunity away” from people wanting the items.

The engraved pocketwatch eventually sold for $2,375. The signed portrait sold for $3,650.
