Grand jury to decide if charges will be filed in predawn shooting behind Hueytown gas station

A Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff grand jury will decide whether charges will be filed in a fatal shooting earlier today in Hueytown.

Just after 1 a.m., Hueytown 911 received a call about shots fired in the 2500 block of 19th Street.

Officer responded to the area where two people at a nearby residence told them at least one shot had been fired behind the Exxon. They searched the area but did not find any evidence of shots being fire, police officials said.

At 3:54 a.m., police were notified of a body in that same area.

They arrived to find 21-year-old Romeo Bruce Bankhead. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 4:09 a.m.

Lt. Michael Shupe said parties involved, including the shooter, have been identified and interviewed.

After consulting with the Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney’s Office, the decision was made to present the case to a grand jury for indictment consideration. No charges are being filed at this time.

Bankhead is Hueytown’s third homicide this year, and the second in just over a week. Police on Monday said today’s homicide is not linked to last weekend’s shooting death of a 17-year-old boy.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 149 homicides including the three in Hueytown.
