Grades from Alabamaâs season-ending loss to Michigan in Rose Bowl
Alabama football’s season ended in disappointing fashion Monday. The Crimson Tide lost an overtime Rose Bowl in the College Football Playoff semifinals to Michigan 27-20.
The next time the Crimson Tide takes the field, it will be to play Western Kentucky in the 2024 season-opener.
Offense: D
Alabama struggled all over the place. Many of the issues that hurt the Tide early in the 2023 season returned in force for the Rose Bowl.
Snaps were bad. Blocking was bad, and execution all over the field was abysmal.
The offense managed to gain a pulse late in the game. However, it wasn’t enough to make up for the sins of the first half.
Defense: B
Keeping with the theme of reverting back to early-season form, the defense kept Alabama in the game. Even with it not being its most spectacular game stats-wise, the group remained stout.
It clearly wasn’t a perfect showing. There were certainly lapses, and Blake Corum was able to make plays when it counted to help Michigan win the game.
But if the offense could have followed more of the defense’s lead, Alabama likely would have won.
Special teams: A-
Will Reichard deserves a tip of the cap from Alabama fans. For years, the Crimson Tide kicker position was an internet meme, but the Hoover product changed that.
He capped off his career, which has seen him break the NCAA’s all-time points record with two field goals over 50 yards against the Wolverines. He was also perfect on extra points.
Things weren’t perfect elsewhere, but Reichard earns the team’s top grade as a lifetime achievement award here.
Coaching: D-
The Crimson Tide might have overachieved at times this season, but Monday’s loss was a return to old bad habits. When its mistakes that have plagued the team all season that lead to a loss on a stage like the Rose Bowl, it’s hard to look past the coaching staff.
Alabama made some adjustments at the half that helped it gain the lead. But the offensive playcalling wasn’t up to snuff and the issues that have been around all season doomed the Crimson Tide.
Overall: F
Alabama fell short of a national championship game for the third consecutive season. There were some positives to the game, but not enough to earn a passing grade.
