Government contractor plans 62 layoffs in Anniston

A government contractor is laying off more than 60 employees in Anniston, according to a recent WARN notice.

Amentum plans to layoff 62 employees starting April 3, per the notice filed with the Alabama Department of Commerce last week.

Spokespeople for the Chantilly, Virginia-based company did not respond to requests for comment.

Tony Bennington, director of planning and economic development for Anniston, said that Amentum’s local operations are at the Anniston Army Depot. He told AL.com that he didn’t have any information about the layoffs.

A public affairs spokesperson for the Army Depot said he didn’t have any information about it.

Amentum has a static detonation chamber worksite in Anniston, where it destroys explosive weapons, per its website.

The company employs more than 53,000 people in 80 countries.

Federal law requires large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state 60 days in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. Those WARN notices are published by the Alabama Department of Commerce.

The expected workforce cuts bring Alabama’s tally of employees impacted by mass layoffs already scheduled for 2025 to nearly 1,200. It comes a few months after Amentum completed its merger with some businesses owned by Texas-based tech firm Jacobs Solutions Inc.
