Gordo has lured a seven-time state championship head football coach from Mississippi out of a short retirement to take over its program. Chris Chambless was approved by the Pickens County Board of Education as the new head coach for the Green Wave on Thursday evening, replacing Gus Smith who had resigned following a second-round playoff loss in November.

Chambless led the West Point High School Green Wave – the coach may not have to ditch any of his previous coaching garb coming to lead the Green Wave in Pickens County – to eight consecutive state championship games with five wins, including one in his final season.
