Girl, 13, fatally struck by 2 vehicles while walking with friends in northwest Jefferson County.
A child was killed Thursday night when she was struck by two vehicles in northwest Jefferson County.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just after 8 p.m. to a report of a pedestrian struck on Heflin Avenue West near Oak Ridge Drive in Forestdale.
They arrived to find the 13-year-old girl critically injured. She was taken to Children’s of Alabama where she was pronounced dead at 9:01 p.m, said sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money.
Money said evidence indicates the girl was walking with friends in the road when she was hit by a vehicle. She was then struck by a second vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the girl as Yasmine L. Swain.
Both drivers were interviewed.
The investigation is ongoing by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team.
Authorities initially said the girl was 12 years old, but later updated to say she was 13. The story was updated to reflect that change.
