Giant wooden troll and ‘living maze’ with hidden surprises arrive in Alabama

A giant troll has arrived in Huntsville but there’s no need to fear – the 20-foot-tall wooden sculpture is a motherly figure meant to enchant. Mama Zelda was unveiled this week at Huntsville Botanical Garden, along with a living maze that leads to the sculpture that will entertain visitors of all ages.

The new permanent exhibit, called Mother Earth Troll Garden, is “designed to ignite curiosity and adventure,” said Brent Boyd with Huntsville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Access to the troll and maze are included with the price of admission. See ticket prices here.

The sculpture was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who has been erecting his monuments to nature in botanical gardens and arboretums across the world. Find more info here.

Dambo said the trolls are made from recycled materials. “Mama Zelda is more than a sculpture – she’s a storyteller, a guardian of the natural world, and a reminder of the beauty that comes from reimagining what is often overlooked,” he said in a press release. “It is an honor to bring her to Huntsville, and I hope she will inspire people for years to come to rethink the value of their trash and see that beautiful things can be made from it.”

And Dambo plans to keep building. “I am on a mission to make a thousand Trolls and other artworks from waste materials,” he wrote on his website. He has created more than 140 to date.

Mama Zelda’s head, hands and feet were built in in Dambo’s studio in Copenhagen, then the parts were transported to Huntsville where members of Dambo’s team and community volunteers built the body, Boyd said.

To get to Zelda, visitors will walk through a “whimsical maze,” said Laura McPhail spokesperson for the Botanical Garden.

McPhail said it is an “immersive experience, featuring a maze of native plants, shaded seating areas, and hidden surprises along winding paths that lead to Mama Zelda’s tranquil resting place.”

Boyd said the maze is filled with “hidden surprises, such as a secret swing and cozy, shaded seating areas perfect for reflection and relaxation.”
