Opelika got the nod over potential locations in Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Mississippi, according to the Alabama Department of Commerce.
Ivey called Miele a “wonderful addition to our state’s business community, and I look forward to the day when its new Opelika facility is turning out first-class ‘Made in USA’ appliances coming from Alabama.”
Miele is the world’s leading maker of domestic appliances, including refrigeration products, coffee makers, dishwashers and laundry and floor care products, as well as cooking, baking and steam-cooking appliances. It has a global workforce of more than 22,000.
“Overall, Opelika offers the best conditions for a successful start for our new plant, including the long-term perspective for further expansion stages,” Uwe Brunkhorst, Miele’s senior vice president for business unit cooking said.
“Miele is making a significant investment in Opelika that will not only create several hundred jobs over the next few years but also deliver a massive economic impact for the region,” Alabama Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield said. “We’re committed to providing the support that this world-class German company needs to achieve long-term success with its Alabama growth project.”
