Georgia woman allegedly impersonated Alabama deputy
Scottsboro police say an Austell, Ga. woman is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $35,000 bond after she posed as a deputy as part of a fraud.
And investigators believe the case is tied to others in Alabama, Florida and Georgia.
Lt. Ryan Putman of Scottsboro police said a victim reported on Dec. 8 last year that they had been contacted by someone identifying themselves as a deputy sheriff from a “nearby county agency.”
The victim was told to bring $3,500 in cash to meet a bondsman at the Jackson County Courthouse square or face arrest. The victim met a woman in the square and paid the money.
The victim came to Scottsboro Police shortly after and filed a report, Putman said.
The woman who met with the victim was later identified as Ciara Cachay Gay, Putman said. She has been charged with first degree property theft and impersonating a police officer.
Putman said the woman has been charged with similar crimes in Georgia and Florida, and Scottsboro investigators are still being contacted by other agencies in connection with the crime.
“When it’s all said and done, this is going to be extensive,” Putman said.
