Georgia officer fatally struck by Alabama police officer after chase across state line, troopers say

A Georgia law enforcement officer has died after being hit by a Lanett police officer during a high-speed chase.

The fatality victim has been identified as Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Eric Minix.

The crash happened in the early-morning hours on Interstate 85 in Chambers County.

According to Lanett police, the chase began in Georgia and crossed over into Alabama when the deadly crash took place.

Coweta County sheriff’s officials was one of multiple law enforcement officers pursuing a stolen vehicle. During the apprehension of the suspect, Minix was struck by a Lanett police officer.

He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect is in custody.

“Minix was a dedicated deputy and K9 officer, but more importantly, he was a friend to everyone who knew him,’’ Coweta County sheriff’s officials said.

‘Eric leaves behind a loving wife and three daughters,’’ the statement read. “We have lost a good deputy. We have lost a good man. We have lost a good friend.”

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation. The Lanett officer has been placed on administrative leave pending that investigation.
